Amid all the other festivities involved with the end of a school year, six top male and female seniors were honored on June 10 at the Section III Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
It includes Fayetteville-Manlius seniors Brittany Hill and Matt McDonough. Hill competed in volleyball and softball with the Hornets, and is going to attend the University at Buffalo. McDonough, who took part in football, ice hockey and lacrosse, is on his way to St. Lawrence University.
From Jamesville-DeWitt, senior graduate McKenzie Kallquist was chosen. She is attending the University of Pittsburgh after competing in soccer, cross country and track. Thomas Hays, who played four sports at J-D (football, track, swimming and golf), is going to SUNY-Binghamton.
Marisa Romeo, who led Christian Brothers Academy’s girls lacrosse team to two state titles in two different classes (Class C in 2011, Class B in 2013), was honored before she departs for Harvard, as was David Carey, a track and cross country standout who is going to Canisius College in Buffalo.
Held annually, the Section III Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner hands out the most prestigious academic honor the section can bestow.
To be eligible, students have to maintain a grade average of 90 or better and have participated in a varsity sport. Community service and participation in other extracurricular activities are also taken into account.
Of the 143 athlete honored in 2013, 27 of them were ranked at the top of their class and 114 of them ranked in the top 10. More than $6,500 in scholarship money was handed out.
