Rachel Garn won twice as the Marcellus girls track and field team made its way to third place in Monday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Chittenango High School.
All told, the Mustangs earned 88 points, just ahead of Westhill/Bishop Ludden (80 points), but behind league powers Skaneateles (136 points) and Cazenovia (114 points). Jordan-Elbridge, with 48.5 points, slid into sixth place in the 10-team field.
Garn, who had raced in the Loucks Games in White Plains just two days earlier and finished third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, showed no fatigue here, going 5:00.80 to win the 1,500-meter run and, in the 800-meter run, going 2:26.03 to beat Westhill/Ludden’s Annibel Coolican (2:28.79) by 2.76 seconds.
Marcellus also went 1-2 in the shot put, where Johanna Sylcox won with a top throw of 31 feet 9 inches and her older sister, Suzanna, was second with 30’5”. Westhill-Ludden saw Kayla Wild finish third (29’10 ½”) and Anna Beaudry finish fourth.
Wild did prevail in the discus, her heave of 86’8” just enough to hold off Suzanna Sylcox (84’4”), who was second ahead of Beaudry (83’5”) in third.
The Mustangs’ Abbie Fallon made her way to second place in the 100-meter dash final in 13.51 seconds, just behind Skaneateles’ Amanda Wetmore (13.41 seconds), and later finished third in the 200-meter dash in 27.95 seconds, adding a sixth in the long jump.
Zoe Higgins (18.23 seconds) and Emily Randall (18.25 seconds) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles, with Higgins later taking fourth and Randall sixth in the 400 hurdles.
Westhill/Ludden was victorious in the 4×400 relay, where Coolican, Emily Washburn, Erin Morrell and Caroline Coates hit the line in 4:24.74, holding off J-E’s quartet of Julie Hines, Brianna Byrnes, Brittany Hares and Emily Weichert, who was second in 4:27.58.
In the high jump, Erin Christensen won when she cleared 4 feet 8 inches, while Coolican (4’4”) finished third and Weichert was fifth.
Christensen, Morrell, Washburn and Genny Corcoran take second place in the 4×800 relay in 10:02.40, just behind Skaneateles (9:57.65) as Marcellus finished sixth in 11:35.45. Coolican was third in the 1,500 (5:03.09) behind Garn, with Coates (5:07.39) in fifth place, as Christensen took fifth in the 800 and Molly Clark was sixth in the 3,000.
For J-E, Hines was second (1:01.14) to Skaneateles’ Taylor Woodruff (1:00.62) in the 400-meter dash, also took second (14’11 ¾”) behind Hannibal’s Devin Sorell (15’6 ¼”) in the long jump, and finished fourth in the 200, while Weichert made her way to second place in the 400 hurdles in 1:12.31, with Skaneateles’ Raenah Campbell (1:10.86) in front of her.
Byrnes got fourth place (2:31.26) in the 800, while Mary Elizabeth Dristle was fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:24.23), with the Mustangs’ Schuyler Stuart in sixth. J-E’s Danielle Clark was sixth in both the shot put and pole vault.
Solvay, who had eight points, did have Bella Nieves finish fourth in the discus (80’1”) as Angela Frateschi got fifth place in the pentathlon, with 1,522 points, ahead of J-E’s Emily Hartwell in sixth place. The Bearcats had a fifth in the 4×100 relay in 58.58 seconds.
