Now the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team’s long win streak has zoomed past the 220-match mark, with no signs of it letting up anytime soon.
The Hornets stared down another major challenger last Wednesday afternoon, taking a 6-1 victory over Baldwinsville as it won all four doubles matches.
In the featured match, Josh Druger and Dan Miron knocked off the Bees’ star duo of Dan Kot and Grady Schmidt 7-6, 7-5. Nick Guarino and Abhi Sishtla beat Chris Drain and Eric Johnson by those exact same scores as Kenny Friedman and Jeremy Zhang beat Matt Lawrence and Nick Walker 6-0, 6-1, while Chris Lansing and Oscar Reis handled Gavin Murphy and Scott Wolff 6-0, 6-2.
A classic first singles match saw Mike Mintskovsky turn back B’ville’s Matt Rothenhoefer 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. And while Ryan Izant lost to Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini 7-5, 6-4, Brooks Nagle was impressive, beating Jeff Stone 6-2, 6-2.
A day earlier, F-M breezed past Liverpool, the last team to beat the Hornets back in 1989, by a 7-0 margin.
In singles, Mintskovsky handled Ian Szczesniak 6-3, 6-2, while Nagle beat Connor Vaughn 6-2, 6-2, and Izant gained his own 6-3, 6-2 decision over Aaron Laviolette. In the four doubles matches, the Hornets’ teams of Druger-Miron, Friedman-Wilbert Geng, Lansing-Reis and Guarino-Sishtla lost just three games between them in eight sets.
Right after B’ville, the Hornets beat Cicero-North Syracuse 7-0. Mintskovsky and Nagle did not lose a game in singles, while Izant defeated Sean Starkweather 6-2, 6-2. Amid a doubles sweep, Adam Jackson and Sean Purcell worked a bit longer, but still beat Mike Riccardi and Devin Smith 6-3, 6-3.
To complete a 4-0 week, the Hornets made it 223 matches in a row against East Syracuse-Minoa, shutting out the Spartans 7-0.
ESM sent its singles start, Tyler Underwood and Brandon Stone, into first doubles, counting on a point there – but still seeing Druger and Miron beat them 7-6, 7-5.
Otherwise, Nagle and Reiss romped past Mike Abbott and Connor Bayly 6-0, 6-1, while Shistla and Purcell blanked Anson Cheng and A.J. Laury 6-0, 6-0. F-M’s singles quartet of Friedman, Geng, Lansing and Mintskovsky lost just three games in eight total sets.
