Tired of sitting around and waiting for it to clear up and warm up, the Solvay softball team displayed plenty of firepower once it took the field.
The Bearcats, who won the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title a season ago, dominated last Monday’s game at Cazenovia, using its powerful lineup to bash the Lakers 18-0.
Not content with a three-run first inning and a five-run third inning, Solvay clinched matters with 10 runs in the top of the eighth, all in support of Julie Gardner and Molly McGuire’s combined one-hitter than involved 13 strikeouts.
At the plate, Jackie Gardner tripled, doubled three times and earned four RBIs. Julie Gardner smashed a home run and earned three RBIs, with Shannen Sullivan also driving in three runs. Chelsie Delperuto, Nicole Antonacci and Sydney Cimini each had two RBIs and two runs scored.
Rained out of Tuesday’s game with Bishop Grimes, Solvay did play Wednesday against Bishop Ludden and did much the same thing as it did with Cazenovia, pulling off a one-sided shutout as it smashed the Gaelic Knights 16-0.
Solvay had multiple runs in five different innings, capped by a five-run sixth. Jackie Gardner tripled twice and doubled on her way to five RBIs, not to mention pitching a complete-game, three-hit shutout that again involved 13 strikeouts.
Sullivan went four-for-five and scored four times as Julie Gardner doubled and scored three runs. Antonacci and Cimini each scored twice.
In its opener, the Gaelic Knights visited Phoenix, where it prevailed 8-6, erasing an early 2-0 deficit with four runs in the top of the fourth and clinching it with a three-run seventh.
Cazzandra Griglock, with two hits and three RBIs, paced the Ludden attack. Jessica Sciore had three hits and three runs scored as Amanda Brogan, Sarah Hayes and Ally Weigand each drove in one run. Griglock also pitched and struck out five while allowing nine hits.
Only the temperamental weather could slow Solvay down, as games against Baldwinsville and Oneida on Saturday were postponed due to the heavy rains and cold temperatures that returned to the area on Friday night.
The Bearcats would hope to get in a trio of league games this week, facing Marcellus and Chittenango before a big showdown Friday against Westhill.
