It had not yet warmed up, nor had it dried out too much, by the time Cicero-North Syracuse’s track and field teams hosted its 10th annual Relays last Friday at Bragman Stadium.

But the show went on, and the Northstars, making its 2013 debut, won the team honors on both sides of the ledger, while Liverpool finished second on the girls side.

During that girls meet, C-NS picked up 82 points, to the Warriors’ 58, grabbing high finishes everywhere, but especially in the five field events, where it never finished worst than third.

Javielle Fanizzi won the individual long jump, going 16 feet 10 inches, and teamed with Olivia King (who was fifth) for a winning combined leap of exactly 32 feet, more than a foot better than West Seneca West (30’7”) as Tammy Brodie and Yasmeen Griffin put Liverpool in fourth place.

Meanwhile, in the shot put Destiny Monica had a winning throw of 34’2”, with C-NS teammate Shannon Hanmer third, leading to another title at 64’4” and another fourth-place effort for the Warriors (53’2”).C-NS also had Candace Segars and Brigitte Harris were second in the discus, throwing it 152’6” as Jamesville-DeWitt won with 169’2”.

Liverpool saw Brodie and Jessica Turner combine to win the high jump, combining to clear 9 feet as C-NS (8’10”) tied for second. Then Catherine Rowell and Alexus Gersbacher won the triple jump for the Warriors, going 65’6” between them, with the Northstars’ Jade Jenkins and Hannah Szumloz (64’7”) in the second spot.

Szumloz and Cheyanna Colin both finished in the top five in the 100-meter hurdles, and their combined time of 35.55 seconds held off Rush-Henrietta (35.78 seconds) at the top. Marissa Colburn and Madison Kolakowski got to second place in the 400 hurdles in 2:36.03, with Liverpool’s tandem of Jennifer Higgins and Kristen Jevis in fourth place.

Jacqlynn Halstead, Taylor Parry, Amanda Shuman and Maria LaMontagne helped C-NS run to second place in the 4×800 relay in 10:30.71, where Liverpool (10:46.83) was fourth.

In the 1,600 sprint medley, it was the Warriors prevailing as Rowell, Ore Akinpelu, Jazmine Herbert and Juliana Basla, in a time of 4:25.83, beat runner-up Baldwinsville by more than three seconds. C-NS (4:35.87) got fourth place.

Liverpool also had Basla, Morgan Mahoney, Abby McNamara and Morgan Chewning-Kulick finish second in the mile relay with a total time of 22:06.33, just behind Rush-Henrietta (22:01.12) as C-NS took fourth place, matching its fourth-place effort in the 4×100 relay. The Warriors also were fourth in the 4×400 relay, with the Northstars fifth.

Over in the boys meet, C-NS picked up 66.33 points and again topped the field, with Baldwinsville (48 points) in the runner-up spot and Liverpool, with 24 points, tying for seventh place.

Finishing second and third, respectively, among individuals helped Pete Girardi and Morgan Austen win the 110 high hurdles with a combined 34.19 seconds, just ahead of J-D (34.68 seconds) for that top spot. Girardi and Austen also got to second place in the 400 hurdles (2:03.90), this time trailing West Genesee (2:01.71) at the wire.

Avery Yarn, Shawn Webb, Evan Russell and Austen McDowell worked together and won the 4×400 relay in 3:39.70, with runner-up Indian River (3:42.73) more than three seconds behind. Webb then joined Nate Hilt, Steve Mirizio and Mark Broughton as the Northstars, in 45.52 seconds, beat J-D (46.02) by half a second to win the 4×100.

Joe Castaldo, second in the individual shot put (42’8”), and Nick Golembieski were second (80’3”) to West Genesee (81’5”) on the team side, with Castaldo and Logen Lickfield third (209’9”) in the discus.

Liverpool contended in the 4×800 relay, where Connor Buck, Dan Muldoon, Nick LeClair and Ben Petrella got second place in 8:44.04, just ahead of C-NS, who got third place in 8:58.56.

In the mile relay, Buck, Muldoon, LeClair and Alex Christensen finished third in 18:34.91, while C-NS (19:32.15) was fourth. Mark Vanmarter and Ryheim Lawes earned third place (37’9”) in the triple jump, the Warriors’ best finish in a field event.
