It was only fitting that Baldwinsville’s boys indoor track and field team would take charge at the meet named in honor of long-time coaching great John Arcaro.
Led by seniors Shay Sargeant and Alec Peinkofer, the Bees prevailed in Wednesday night’s John Arcaro Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena, picking up 60 points. Only Fayetteville-Manlius, with 48 points, got close to B’ville’s total.
Sargeant began his big night in the 55-meter dash, where he sped to the line in 6.77 seconds, just enough to hold off Corcoran’s Devlen Williams (6.81 seconds) and Fowler’s Delee Williams (6.88 seconds) for the title.
Moving to the long jump, Sargeant unleashed a top leap of 21 feet ¾ inch to win a second time. Only Devlen Williams, with 20’ 6 ¼”, was within half a foot of Sargeant’s total.
Peinkofer, fresh off a superb cross country campaign that included a top-five finish in the state Federation meet in mid-November, proved uncatchable in the 1,000-meter run.
With a time of two minutes, 36.24 seconds, Peinkofer routed the rest of the field, with the runner-up, Hannibal’s Ben Slate, more than 13 seconds behind in 2:49.97.
Andy Fleming stepped up, too, the senior getting to second place in the 600-meter run in 1:28.84, just behind F-M’s Charlie Beeler, who prevailed in 1:27.81.
B’ville also gained 14 points out of the 300-meter dash, where Jeff Mahar finished second in 37.40 seconds and Nate Wicks was third in 37.77 seconds behind Liverpool’s Ryheim Lawes (36.79 seconds).
Mahar teamed with Joe Stanard, Brent Grippe and Sam Smith as the Bees, in 1:40.66, took second place to Nottingham (1:35.48) in the 4×200 relay. Josh Perez was seventh in the 3,200-meter run, while Logan Maar took ninth in the pole vault.
B’ville’s girls indoor team would have to wait until Jan. 3 for its portion of the John Arcaro Invitational, but both boys and girls athletes are going to SRC Arena this Thursday for the Oscar Jensen Holiday Relays.
