While not quite able to match their high finishes from the Jack Morse Relays a week earlier, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse boys indoor track and field teams still did quite well in Wednesday night’s John Arcaro Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena.
Overall, the Warriors finished third, with 37 points, with the Northstars gaining 27 points to hang on to fifth place. Baldwinsville, where John Arcaro coached, won the meet with 60 points, with Fayetteville-Manlius (48 points) in the runner-up spot.
In the 300-meter dash, Ryheim Lawes went to the top, as his time of 36.79 seconds fended off two B’ville runners, Jeff Mahar (37.40) and Nate Wicks (37.77), while Warriors teammate Mark Vanmarter finished seventh.
Geoffrey Bell threw the shot put 44 feet 10 inches, putting the Liverpool junior in second place behind Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s Corey Wilkinson (48’ 8 ¾”). Bell’s teammate, Anthony Miller, finished eighth.
Liverpool nearly got a win in the pole vault, too, as Travis Chewning-Kulick cleared 11’9” to finish just behind Skaneateles’ Carson Schwab, who won with 12’. C-NS’sCameron LaBarge (10’6”) made his way to sixth place.
C-NS contended in the 4×400 relay, where Nathan Hilt, Austen McDowell, Abraham Abraham and Mark Broughton finished second in 3:46.68, topped by Jamesville-DeWitt, who won in 3:38.81. Liverpool was fifth in 3:56.08.
During the 55-meter hurdles, C-NS’s Morgan Austen got second place, in 8.25 seconds, trailing only Hannibal’s Jordan Skipworth (8.14 seconds) as Liverpool’s Gaurab Bhattacharya got third place in 8.65 seconds.
Anthony Lupia gave the Northstars a third-place finish in the mile in 4:38.02, with Liverpool’s Connor Buck in ninth. Buck did better in the 600-meter run, rising to fifth place in 2:51.51 as Paul DeGennaro (2:51.93) was sixth for the Northstars and Landon Veney was ninth for the Warriors.
Vanmarter grabbed a point with a sixth-place long jump of 19’ 7 ½” as the Northstars’ Avery Yarn finished 10th. C-NS saw Bryson Mayes finish fifth in the triple jump, going 39’ 6 ½”, and tie Austen for sixth (5’6”) in the high jump.
Also for Liverpool, Nick LeClair took ninth in the 3,200-meter run. C-NS’s Bryan Sibble took eighth in the 600-meter run as Shawn Webb was 10th in the 55-meter dash and the Northstars ran to ninth (1:43.42) in the 4×200 relay.
Both the C-NS and Liverpool girls indoor track teams would have to wait until Jan. 3 for its portion of the John Arcaro Invitational, but both boys and girls athletes are going to SRC Arena this Thursday for the Oscar Jensen Holiday Relays.
