Newly steeled after competing in the Onondaga High School League tournament that it hosted on Oct. 12, the Skaneateles girls swim team still had some regular-season work to do.
That included last Wednesday night’s meet against Mexico, where the Lakers led from start to finish and put away the Tigers by a score of 96-85.
In the opening 200 medley relay, Skaneateles prevailed as Haley Buchholz, Nikki Cole, Leah King and Emily Wirth finished in a time of 2:06.98.
Three of them would go on to win their own races. King was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.07, while Buchholz needed 1:10.55 to prevail in the 100 backstroke and Cole, in 1:15.50, earned a victory in the 100 breaststroke.
By then, Rachel Teixeira was already a two-time winner. Teixeira swam the 200 freestyle in 2:10.35, and followed it up by beating the field in the 500 freestyle in 5:47.75. Megan Molnar added a diving title with 152.95 points.
In Friday’s meet at Oswego, the Lakers got two titles from Cole, but still found itself on the wrong end of a 96-84 defeat to the Buccaneers.
Cole first struck in the 200 medley relay, helping Buchholz, King and Wirth as the Lakers’ time in that event improved to 2:02.38, enough to fend off Oswego (2:02.41) by inches.
Later, Cole would control the 100 butterfly, beating the field in a time of 1:07.52, and she went on to the 100 breaststroke, where she claimed first place in 1:16.45. Buchholz earned a title in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.07.
Meanwhle, Teixeira improved more than five seconds, to 5:42.02, in the 500 freestyle, but still was second to the Bucs’ Brenna Riley (5:34.74) as Ellen Legg took second (2:39.32) in the 200 individual medley.
Legg, Leah King, Halle King and Rachel Ceparski were second (1:54.90) to Oswego (1:49.85) in the 200 freestyle relay, but rebounded in the 400 freestyle relay as Buchholz, Cole, Teixeira and Haley Chalupnicki prevailed in 4:05.45.
All of this followed the OHSL diving championships on Oct. 13, where Megan Molnar finished in fifth place with 259.45 points, with Ellie Meyer (105.90 points) and Tara Chalupnicki (72.70 points) behind them. Jamesville-DeWitt’s Taylor Cook won with 379.45 points.
