Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt’s girls swim teams took a starring role in last Friday’s Onondaga High School League meet at Skaneateles, breaking four different pool records before it was done.
Summer Schmitt smashed two of them all by herself, doing so in the 100 butterfly as her time of 57.38 seconds beat out J-D’s Katie Coyne, who was second in 1:00.38. It was the same in the 200 freestyle, where Schmitt set a new pool mark with 1:56.13, leaving the field far behind.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Schmitt, teaming with Mary Frances Ierlan, Julia Torell and Maggie Fletcher, broke the pool record in 3:52.86. This came after J-D’s quartet of Alden Coyne, Katie Coyne, Sophia Farchione and Samantha Coombs did the same in the 200 freestyle relay with 1:44.59, the best in Section III this fall.
Aside from all this, Maggie Fletcher again gave CBA a sweep of the sprints, taking the 50 freestyle in 25.65 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 54.94 seconds, exactly two seconds better than Alden Coyne in the latter event.
J-D wasn’t shut out on the individual side, though. Katie Coyne beat Manlius-Pebble Hill’s Rachel Perry, 2:16.46 to 2:19.91, in the 200 individual medley, while Molly Hair won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.80, with teammate Hailey Schultz (1:15.52) second.
Sophia Farchione was second in the 100 backstroke behind Perry, who won in 1:00.76, while Marissa Potamianos got second in the 200 free behind Schmitt. CBA’s Annie Fletcher won the 500 freestyle in 5:48.77.
CBA took part in a three-way meet at Hamilton College against New Hartford and Binghamton last Tuesday night, where it earned all kinds of individual titles, even if its total of 717 points fell behind the Spartans’ 880.
Schmitt, Maggie Fletcher and Kathryn Coughlin each posted the fastest times in two individual events. Schmitt tore through the 200 freestyle in 1:56.30, and followed it up with a victory in the 100 butterfly in 58.45 seconds.
As for Fletcher, she again swept the sprints, needing 26.24 seconds to take the 50 freestyle and 56.62 seconds to earn first place in the 100 freestyle. Coughlin swam the 200 individual medley in 2:17.40 and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.30.
Annie Fletcher would swim the 500 freestyle in 5:52.90 and join Schmitt, Maggie Fletcher and Ierlan in the 400 freestyle relay (4:01.80). Ierlan, Coughlin, Schmitt and Torell claimed the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.60 as Lexy McCauley helped Coughlin and the Fletchers get a time of 1:59.30 in the 200 medley relay.
J-D rolled past Skaneateles 105-72 last Tuesday night by winning every single event on the meet schedule.
Katie Coyne, after prevailing in the 50 freestyle (26.45 seconds), turned to the 100 backstroke and earned first place in 1:04.20, while Alden Coyne swam the 200 freestyle in 2:04.33 and had a strong effort in the 500 freestyle (5:36.62), too.
Hair was first in the 200 IM (2:25.05) before she claimed the 100 freestyle in 58.74 seconds. Taylor Cook earned 209.6 points in diving, right before Schultz took the 100 butterfly (1:06.46) and Erin Noble swam to first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.06.
It was Noble, teaming with Coombs, Farchione and Katie Coyne, that won the 200 medley relay (2:01.15), commencing a relay sweep. Hair, Schultz, Coombs and Farchione worked together in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.51) as, at meet’s end, Coombs joined Potamianos, Katie Coyne and Hannah Gibson to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:05.41.
Fayetteville-Manlius went to Auburn on Wednesday night and took an 88-80 defeat to the Maroons. Olivia Ryan and Grace Garver had a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly, where Ryan had a time of 1:11.97 and Garver was second in 1:12.84.
Ryan, Morgan Way, Julie Barger and Caroline Mortelitti got to first in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:20.89. Garver took second in the 200 IM (2:40.08) as Barger finished second in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Gabby Hall claimed second place in the 100 breaststroke.
Two nights later, the Hornets fell to Oswego, 100-79, and remain winless this fall.
