The Department of Defense has announced that a soldier from Liverpool was killed in action in Afghanistan earlier this week.
Sgt. 1st Class Daniel T. Metcalfe, 29, died Sep. 29, in Sayyid Abad, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. Metcalfe was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy. He was the 2,000th member of the American armed forces killed in the conflict.
The DOD is investigating the incident.
Metcalfe was born in Liverpool and lived here during his youth. He later moved to the Rochester area and attended Penfield High School from ninth to 11th grade, from 1997 to 2000. He left school his junior year to join the service. Both of his parents also served in the military. He served three previous tours in the military and completed a stint at Fort Benning, Ga., before heading back to Afghanistan for a fourth tour of duty.
In addition to his parents and a sister, Metcalfe is survived by his wife, Vesna, and their three children, Alexis, 6, Edward, 3 and Nathaniel, 11 months.
Services and burial were held in Penfield Thursday, Oct. 4.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that flags statewide would be flown at half-staff in Metcalfe’s honor on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
