At the end, when it counted the most, the Chittenango boys golf team finally caught and passed Christian Brothers Academy.
By doing so, the Bears won the Class B portion of Tuesday’s Onondaga High School League championship tournament at Foxfire Golf Club in Baldwinsville.
Chittenango had met CBA twice in head-to-head regular-season matches. Both times, the Brothers prevailed, maintaining a 28-match win streak in the process. That included a 212-219 decision on Sept. 24, just a week before the league tournament.
But when they got to Foxfire for an 18-hole round instead of a nine-hole sprint, the Bears proved better. Shooting a team score of 434, Chittenango edged CBA, who finished with 440, by six shots, and also provided the best overall team total as Cortland, the A division champions, finished with 438.
Sean Murray led the way, as his four-over-par 76 tied CBA’s Drew Derrenbacker for the low individual round. Mike McIntosh, who posted a 78, was alone in third, four shots ahead of the Brothers’ second-best total recorded by Jack Bellardini.
Freshman Ryan Delaney (who shot a 95), eighth-grader Kyler Christopher (who had a 106), Kyle McGinnis and Erik Russell rounded out the winning squad.
Both Murray and McIntosh advanced to the overall Section III tournament, which won’t be held until late May at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course.
