Village of East Syracuse residents will decide the fate of their police department during a special election Tuesday, Oct. 16.
The East Syracuse Village Board passed a resolution to hold the election on Oct. 16 at its meeting tonight. The board also voted to enter into an inter-municipal agreement with the Town of DeWitt. The agreement would have East Syracuse pay DeWitt $400,000 for approximately five years to pick up police services in the village, should residents vote to abolish the department.
This followed the board’s 4-1 vote to adopt a local law to abolish the police department, subject to a village-wide referendum, after a public hearing was held. Deputy Mayor Barbara Quonce cast the sole “no” vote.
Abolishing the police department would result in an annual savings of $249 for a property assessed at $100,000, according to a study done by Onondaga County Comptroller Bob Antonacci.
