Now Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue boys golf team can seriously think about vying for top honors in both the CNY Counties League and Section III Class AA ranks.
Just after back-to-back wins over Baldwinsville in mid-September, the Northstars took a further step to the top last Wednesday with a dramatic 187-188 victory over long-time power Fayetteville-Manlius at the Greens at Beaumont.
Mike Mento shot a 36 for nine holes, one behind the Hornets’ Mike Lee and tied with Dan Thomas. C-NS Blue overcame that fact with Derek Teague posting a 37, while Joey Petrin, Jon Petrin and Luke Cavallo had matching totals of 38, which tied the Hornets’ Nick Santro and bettered Kevin Lux (39) and Ryan Keller (40).
More excitement followed on Thursday afternoon, when C-NS Blue took on Oswego at Lake Shore Yacht and Country Club and again won by a single shot, 205-206, over the Buccaneers.
In windy conditions, Joey Petrin stood out, posting a 34, five shots better than Oswego’s top player, Jake Anderson, which was crucial in a match this close. Teague shot a 40, while Mento had a 42, Cavallo managed a 44 and Cory Piper stepped up to shoot a 45.
Liverpool again leaned on Karl Deuble for another top-flight performance during last Monday afternoon’s 205-217 victory over Central Square.
Deuble shot a 34, two under par, at Liverpool Country Club, just one shot off his best total for the season and three better than the Red Hawks’ Brandon Payne. Anthony Cabrey, with a 41, offered the most support, with Jackson Hobble (42) and John Rojek (43) close behind.
C-NS Green went to Brooklawn last Monday, where it faced the combined Syracuse city squad and took a 207-209 defeat.
Eddie Szopinsk shot a 40, leading a consistent effort from the Northstars. Mike Dober had a 41, while Anthony Pokrentowski managed a 42. Paul Haberek and Ben Cummings each shot 43 as Syracuse’s Zach McDonald shot a 36, beating Szopinsk by four shots, double the eventual winning margin.
In Thursday’s 206-212 loss to Central Square, John Myers and Drake Pitoniak both shot 41 for C-NS Green, edging Haberek (42) and Szopinsk (43) as Brad Hamilton posted a 45. Brandon Payne led the Red Hawks, shooting a 36.
