No comeback was needed this time for the Skaneateles football team.
The Lakers roared to a 62-7 win over Jordan-Elbridge Thursday night at the Eagles’ John House Stadium, never punting as it accumulated more than 450 yards of total offense.
“We did play pretty well,” Lakers coach Joe Sindoni said. “We executed in some areas we didn’t execute last week against Bishop Ludden, which was good. We still made a couple mistakes, but all in all I was pleased with the effort. They did what they had to do to get the win.”
Skaneateles led 21-0 after one quarter, a stark contrast to the Ludden game six days earlier, where it fell behind 18-7 before rallying for a 31-24 victory.
Steven Bright caught the first of four Conor Herr touchdown passes, from 54 yards out to open the scoring. Max Weiss then ran it over from three yards away. And Weiss closed out the quarter with a two-yard scoring rumble.
The Lakers built their advantage to 42-7 at halftime. Herr threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter, two of them to Jake Cooney (of seven and 16 yards), the other a 28 yard toss to Bright.
“Parts of it were,” Sindoni said when asked if his offense was sharp. “You know I’m always going to look for things to pick apart, but I thought overall they did a nice job.”
J-E’s fine running back, Colby Trexler, ruined the shutout with a 59-yard touchdown romp. Trexler rushed for 157 yards on 13 carries.
Skaneateles scored twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth. Weiss scored both touchdowns in the third, scampering home from two and 32 yards away. Matt Lee’s five yard run closed the scoring.
Sindoni had the opportunity to play a lot of substitutes and used it.
“I was absolutely pleased that we were able to get guys in and get some experience,” he said.
Eagles coach Mike Smart was impressed with Weiss and the Lakers rushing performance.
“They did a nice job with the run,” Smart said. “What I did know was the running game, which they didn’t use a lot against Ludden, was probably better than we thought. What they do is … you have to cover what they give you,” Smart said. “But they’re very good at taking what you give them.”
Herr completed 14 of his 21 passes for 238 yards. His favorite receivers were Cooney (eight catches, 104 yards), Bright (three catches for 88 yards), and Colin Jones (five catches for 69 yards). Weiss carried the ball 14 times for 135 yards.
The Lakers return to action next Friday to host Hannibal.
