Downer Street was closed to traffic early Monday morning as crews worked to remove old pavement along the stretch of road from Seneca Street to M&T Bank.
“This is one of the crazier streets,” said Chuck McAuliffe, a foreman with the Baldwinsville Department of Public Works. “That’s why we shut it down.”
Using a milling machine, the pavement was removed from the road, crushed into smaller pieces and carried away. According to McAuliff, they mill the road so it remains level with connecting streets and driveways. The raw road will remain until crews return to pave it. McAuliff said black top will be laid along Downer Street within the next couple of weeks; the road will be closed for about eight hours while the black top sets.
The Baldwinsville DPW will also focus on Meigs Road and Landrush Way for this year’s milling and paving projects. In addition to replacing the pavement, crews will also remove a knoll on Meigs Road, which creates a blind spot for both vehicles and pedestrians. Once removed, there will be a clear view of the road for all that travel along it.
Officials expect the projects to be completed this September.
