Lysander officials have dropped a motion to make the town clerk’s position an appointive rather than elective position.
“We will take the next year to study that and determine if we will put it on the ballot next year,” said Supervisor John Salisbury.
Town Clerk Lisa Dell added she asked the Onondaga County Comptrollers Office to conduct a study of consolidating clerks’ offices and the OCCO has decided to go ahead with the study, which is a free service to the town.
Officials did, however, approve a motion to change the local law making the elective position of highway superintendent to an appointive position during the Aug. 27 board meeting. This action had already been taken in Van Buren; both towns are pursuing the change in an effort to save taxpayers money through possible inter-municipal agreements among other cost-saving measures.
Now the choice will go to Lysander voters in the form of a referendum on the Nov. 6 ballot. Should Lysander residents approve the change from elective to appointive, candidates for the position of highway superintendent would have to meet civil service requirements.
