The driver and passenger of a pickup truck were killed in a one-vehicle crash in East Syracuse last night.
East Syracuse Police, DeWitt Police and Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the scene of a one-vehicle crash on Hartwell Avenue at around 6:30 p.m., Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh said.
Witnesses told police that the 2006 Dodge pickup was heading south on Fly Road at a high speed when the driver, a female, failed to negotiate the turn onto Hartwell Avenue. The pickup went off the road, crashed into a fence and became airborne after crashing into a tree, deputies said. The truck collided with a second tree before coming to rest, at which point the driver and passenger were trapped inside.
The truck’s engine was thrown into the front entrance of a medical waste disposal company, Stericycle, which is at 798 Hartwell Ave. No one was inside the building at the time of the crash, deputies said.
East Syracuse Fire Department rescue crews responded to the scene and pronounced the driver of the pickup truck dead, deputies said. The passenger, a male, was removed from the truck and taken by EAVES Ambulance to Upstate University Hospital, where he was also pronounced dead.
Members of the Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team are attempting to identify the driver and passenger, and will not release their names until family members have been notified.
