Madison County Sheriff’s deputies are currently investigating an attempted burglary at the United States Post Office located on School Street in New Woodstock.
At 7:30 a.m. Aug. 14, the postmaster of the New Woodstock Post Office notified the Madison County 911 Center to report the building was broken into.
According to Madison County Undersheriff John Ball, deputies arrived to the scene and then determined that forced entry was made to the building. Additional details of the incident have not yet been released, as the investigation is still ongoing.
Ball said Sheriff’s deputies, investigators and crime scene technicians, as well as United States Postal Inspectors from Syracuse interviewed several staff and neighborhood residents, photographed the scene and examined several areas of the post office for fingerprints. A review of inventory is currently being conducted by U.S. Post Office employees in order to account for possible missing items at the New Woodstock location.
“There have been other burglaries in recent days in various areas of Madison County, however they don’t appear to be related to this most recent attempt,” Ball said.
Madison County Sheriff Allen Riley is asking the public to be watchful and diligent in securing their homes and businesses at all times. He reminds residents to check door and window locks as well as alarm systems, and secure valuables in a locked safe or off-premise safety deposit box. Riley also said outdoor equipment should be kept locked in a garage or shed if not in use.
Those leaving the area for an extended period of time are encouraged to notify the Office of the Madison County Sheriff through the website madisoncountysheriff.org and click on “Property Check Request.” Sheriff’s patrol will then complete cursory checks on residences and properties during the owners’ absence.
