A group of business owners in the village of Liverpool is raising money to construct a clock in the village.
The group hopes to raise $35,000 to purchase and install a vintage-style standalone clock for Washington Park at the intersection of Route 57 and First Street. The clock will light up at night and is meant to stand as a symbol to “let our friends and neighbors see how proud we are of our lakeside home,” according to a release from the fundraising campaign, which formed about six weeks ago.
“We have been concentrating on getting signs and flyers printed up,” said Bridgette Plessas, campaign coordinator. “We’re planning a community-wide campaign kickoff event in mid-September.”
The date for that event has not yet been finalized, but it likely will be set some time this week. So far, through signs around the village and other efforts, the campaign has raised about $3,000 for the clock, which already has significant support among village residents.
“We have had great community support for the early advertising of this campaign,” Plessas said. “Many longtime Liverpool residents think it is a great idea and will help show that the village of Liverpool is an inviting and community-oriented place.”
In addition to the signs along Onondaga Lake Parkway and at Washington Park, the fundraising effort has been publicized by its sponsors. Campaign chairman is Jack Fisher of the Fisher Companies. Other members of the committee are Bill Bell of The Bell Group; John Gormel of The Retreat; Mike Charles of Charles Heating & Air Conditioning; Joe Falcone of Syracuse Plastics, LLC; John Maurer of Maurer Funeral Home; Tom Kruger of Key Bank; Angela Stivers of M& T Bank; and Mike Hennigan of Nichols Grocery. Plessas said Nichols will soon begin distributing fliers in all of their grocery bags.
As an additional promotion, 60 donors can be part of the campaign’s “Got a Minute?” donor level, buying each of the 60 minutes on the village’s new clock. “Timekeeper” donors can have a special donor plaque at the base of the clock. Those donations are $500 per minute. Donors can purchase multiple minutes.
Smaller donations are also available to individuals and businesses. Called “Cornerstone” donations, they start at $50 and are available in multiple increments. One engraved memorial brick will be placed at the base of the clock for each Cornerstone donation to enhance and support this special timepiece.
