Barely two months after ending a 23-year sectional championship drought, the Liverpool boys lacrosse team picked up one more trophy.
The Warriors were presented with the ‘Believe to Achieve’ Male Team Award for the spring sports season by the Syracuse Sports Corporation at a ceremony held last Thursday inside the Hank Sauer Room at Alliance Bank Stadium.
Under second-year head coach Mike Felice, Liverpool had a 15-1 regular season, its lone defeat coming to West Genesee.
But after Section III playoff wins over Auburn and Fayetteville-Manlius, the Warriors found itself in the final at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium against those same Wildcats, who had also beaten Liverpool in a triple-overtime epic in the 2011 final.
This version saw the Warriors unable to protect a 5-3 lead late in regulation, and again it went to overtime. However, this time Liverpool made a defensive stop in OT, and Kyle DeAngelis fired home the winning goal just before the extra period ended for a 6-5 victory.
It marked Liverpool’s first sectional title since 1989, before any of the current players had been born, and the Warriors also ended West Genesee’s streak of 10 consecutive sectional championships. Liverpool went on to lose the Class A regional final to Ithaca, an eventual state finalist.
