For much of its brief history, the Pro-Junior Challenge that kicks off the week of the Symetra Tour’s Credit Union Classic belonged to either Fayetteville-Manlius or Christian Brothers Academy.
That wasn’t the case in 2012, though.
On a hot, gusty Monday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club’s East course, the Hornets put up another fine showing in the Pro-Junior Challenge, and East Syracuse-Minoa stepped up, too, tying F-M for second place.
However, both of them would trail Oswego, who put together a torrid nine-hole score of 27, eight under par over Drumlins East’s back nine, in the scramble format.
In all, 14 teams took part in the Pro-Junior Challenge. One Symetra Tour professional is paired with up to four players from a local high school team.
And no one did better than Oswego. Professional Laura Martin, joined by the Buccaneers’ foursome of Tess Gordon, Sarah Gosek, Emilee Anderson and Courtney Kelly, made birdie on every hole except the 15th, a tough par-4 up the hill, on the way to 27.
Meanwhile, F-M’s quartet of Brianna Winslow, Kayla Pallotta, Annie Caputo and Alexandra Millimaci, joined by professional Victoria Elizabeth, had five birdies, but missed other chances to pick up shots, and settled for a five-under-par 30. Two other Hornets, Kelly Brown and Erin Egniczak, filled out the Liverpool roster and finished at 33.
ESM had just three players – Myra Biel, Ashley Downey and Jessica Fralix. But they were enough, along with professional Daneilla Iacobelli, matched F-M’s total of 30 and shared second place.
Emilee Oakes, Kaleigh Sweeney, Mary France Ierlan and Junghye Kim played for CBA with Annie Brophy and managed a 31, four under par, putting the Brothers in a large tie for fourth place with Cazenovia, Marcellus, West Genesee and Rome Free Academy.
As for Jamesville-DeWitt, professional Christina Jones, joined by Molly Hair, Alana Jones, Hali Greenhouse and Valerie Purcell, shot a 32, the same as Chittenango and Westhill. Cicero-North Syracuse (34) and Auburn (35) rounded out the field.
RFA’s Nicolette Darois, the individual Section III champion, tees off in the Credit Union Classic on Friday, just after a junior clinic on Thursday at 10 a.m.
