Robert Mueller, of Marcellus, left for West Virginia Wednesday morning to aid in the American Red Cross of Central New York’s recovery efforts following last week’s storms and power outages.
Mueller will work at a shelter for two weeks. He joins Cortland County resident Robert Stiles, who will help with mass care feeding for many of the thousands of people who were forced from their homes by the power outages.
Mueller, 61, has volunteered with the Red Cross for five years. In that time he has been deployed to Alabama, Louisiana and Rhode Island, and now West Virginia, for recovery efforts.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to help people in their time of need,” Mueller said. “We can all imagine what it would be like to be without power during this heat.”
According to American Red Cross officials, nearly 1,100 Red Cross disaster workers are spread out over 13 states, helping people forced from their homes by the power outages in the Midwest and mid-Atlantic regions, wildfires in the west, and flooding from tropical storm Debby in Florida. Red Cross volunteers provide people with a cool place to stay, meals and snacks, and relief items.
