Don Power is suing the Town of Lysander.
After providing the town with dog control services for more than 40 years, the town terminated his contract this past March citing improper record keeping, invoices for services and handling of impounded animals as reasons.
Power’s two-year contract, signed in January of 2011 by the previous administration, was good through Dec. 31, 2012. He disagrees with the town’s reasons for terminating his contract and is seeking $34,245, which is the unpaid balance of the town’s contract with Jack’s Reef Kennel Dog Protective Agency in which Power serves as president.
Power is also suing Town Councilor Andrew Reeves for defamation. He is seeking $200,000 in damages, an amount that would be covered by the town’s insurance policy. The lawsuit alleges Reeves made statements that damaged Power’s reputation and continues to do so.
The town has appointed two dog control officers to fill the gap in services: Ron Patchette was appointed in January and Richard Billings was appointed in April.
