The Marcellus Open Air Market opened Thursday, June 7, in Marcellus Park. Throughout the summer, the Eagle Observer will interview farmers and other vendors at the local market to find out what’s in season and what’s in store for the coming months.
First up: Mary Carlic, of the Wren’s Den in Marcellus.
What are you selling today?
“This is all handcrafted glycerin soap, and the labels are done by a local artist, Michelle Masters. And then I have the hand creams and lotions, our lavender sachet bags, foot cream, all kinds of stuff.”
What makes your products unique?
“Using her [Masters’] artwork, using a local artist’s artwork, because no one can use it but us, as far as the look. And that it’s glycerin soap, and we use essential oils and natural oils. But I would think that the artwork sets it apart.”
How did you get started in this business?
“When I had my last child, I quit working. I was in sales, and I was a stay at home mom. And we just, I don’t know, were kind of playing around with this and it turned into a business.”
What attracted you to sell your goods at the Marcellus Open Air Market?
“Well, this is great for the community. It’s something that we need here in Marcellus. We have quality vendors here, quality food, unique items — it’s just a nice atmosphere.”
And why should people at the market stop by your booth?
“To support local businesses. To help us grow, help the market, but just to support a local business.”
The Marcellus Open Air Market runs Thursdays 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
