The Jordan-Elbridge Athletic Hall of Fame has inducted four new members into its ranks. The following athletes and coaches were honored June 12 at the J-E High School Auditorium:
John Howes (athletic director/coach)
Howes coached or worked as athletic director at J-E from 1968 to 1995. He coached varsity wrestling, varsity football, varsity track and several modified sports. He was the Onondaga League Football Coach of the Year in 1970. He was recognized with the OHSL Athletic Directors Award in 1987; the Section III Athletic Directors Award in 1991; and the New York State Athletic Administrators Award in 1996.
In 2006 J-E’s football field was renamed in his honor. In 2011 the newly built field/stadium complex at the high school was named after John as well.
Michael Frood (coach: wrestling, lacrosse and football)
Frood has taught or coached at Jordan- Elbridge for more than 37 years. As the varsity wrestling coach from 1976 to 1988 his teams won nine league championships, 10 league tournament championships and six sectional championships, and was ranked top 20 in the state four times. Mike coached 54 individual league champs, 36 class champs, 12 sectional champs, eight state champs and three runner-ups. In 1988 he was honored with the National High School Coaching Award for Wrestling. In 2011 he was inducted into the Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was Teacher/Coach of the Year at J-E in 1987 and 2007.
Frood continues to coach football, wrestling and lacrosse at J-E.
Nick Klock ’85 (football, basketball and baseball)
Klock is a 1985 graduate of J-E. He started and lettered in three sports: football, basketball and baseball.
In football he was a three-year starter. He was an all-league running back and defensive end in 1983/1984; an all-Upstate player in 1984; and a captain in 1984, when he was selected to play in North/South Senior All Star Football Game.
In basketball he was also a three-year starter. He earned all-league honors in 1985; his teams made sectionals in ‘83, ‘84 and ‘85; and he was selected to play in the North/South Senior All Star Basketball Game.
In baseball he lettered in five years (1981-85). He was a captain and the team MVP in ‘83, ‘84 and ‘85, and a first team all-league pitcher in ‘84 and ‘85. In 1981 he pitched a no-hitter as an eighth-grader on the varsity team. In 1985 he was recognized by the Saint Francis Athletic Association and by the Post-Standard as Area Athlete of the Year for baseball.
Klock went on to play baseball at Onondaga Community College and University of South Carolina Upstate.
Brett Frood ‘93 (cross country, wrestling and lacrosse)
Frood is a 1993 graduate of J-E. He lettered in three varsity sports (cross country, wrestling and lacrosse). He was a league champion in wrestling in 1993 and had 58 career wins as a wrestler. He was captain of the wrestling team in 1993.
He was a four-year letter winner for lacrosse (1990-93) and earned first team all-league honors in ‘92 and ‘93; he was the team’s leading scorer both years. He played in the Exceptional Senior All-Star Game and earned Academic All-American honors for lacrosse in 1993. He was also given the J-E Scholar Athlete award; the J-E Outstanding Athlete award; and the Section III Scholarship award his senior year.
Frood graduated as Salutatorian of the J-E Class of ‘93. He went on to play lacrosse for Brown University is now the executive vice president of Stewart-Haas Racing.
