Both of Baldwinsville’s track and field teams went to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium Thursday to compete in the Section III state qualifying meet, hoping to return a week later to be part of the larger state meet.
Gina Carnovale succeeded in that quest. Carnovale won the Division I (large school) 100-meter dash in 12.54 seconds, with teammate Gabby Jordan third in 12.80 seconds.
Later, in the 200-meter dash, Carnovale beat the field again, as she posted 25.91 seconds, enough to hold off Jamesville-DeWitt’s Ally Fox (26.18 seconds) for the top spot. Carnovale’s teammate, Angelica Tomasello, was third.
And Cierra Allen won, too, needing 59.23 seconds to beat the field in the 400-meter dash as she was the only Division I competitor who finished under a minute. Quaneisha Ivey was sixth and Marissa Lathrop was eighth.
Despite the presence of Carnovale, Allen, Jordan and Tomasello, B’ville still finished second (49.78 seconds) to Liverpool (49.16 seconds) in the 4×100 relay.
Annie Peterson worked her way to third place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:55.91, while Mackenzie Ross was third in the 800-meter run in 2:19.80. Carlie McNamara earned third place in the discus with a throw of 92 feet 7 inches as Emily Soeder was fifth in the high jump.
Shay Sargeant made his way to second place in the 100-meter dash in 11.29 seconds as Utica Proctor’s Chris Simmons (10.98 seconds) prevailed. Sargeant also took the runner-up spot in the 200-meter dash, with 22.54 seconds to Simmons’ 22 seconds flat.
Alec Peinkofer, in the boys 800-meter run, got to a time of 1:59.14, second to Liverpool’s Zavon Watkins (1:57.79), and he teamed with Andy Fleming, Josh Perez and Matt Pond for second place in the 4×800 relay in 8:05.04 as Fayetteville-Manlius (7:57.64) prevailed.
Nate Wicks earned his way to third in the 400-meter dash in 51.99 seconds after helping Fleming, Pond and Dan Walker take third in the 4×400 in 3:30.81.
