Leaving no questions, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls track and field team pulled far away from a deep field to claim the Section III Class A championship Tuesday at Camden High School.
The Red Rams picked up 187 points, more than triple the total of runner-up Mexico, who had 62 points. East Syracuse-Minoa, with 39 points, pulled into fifth place.
J-D won all three relay events. It started with the 4×400, where Ally Fox, Danielle Doss, Katy Pieri and Liz Pieri posted a time of four minutes, 13.10 seconds, more than 10 seconds ahead of Mexico (4:23.39).
In the 4×100, Fox, the Pieri sisters and Taylor-Rae Danforth hit the line in 51.78 seconds, leaving Mexico (52.46) and the rest of the field behind. Hannah Stefl, Katie Pinkes, Rachel Fairbanks and Laura Wengert were victorious in the 4×800 in 9:57.21, where ESM (10:36.29) was sixth.
On her own, Stefl, in a time of 7:53.94, held off Fulton’s Hannah Geitner (7:55.33) in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, where Wengert was fifth and Jess Picone sixth. Fairbanks took third in the 1,500-meter run (5:22.03), with Wengert sixth in the 800-meter run.
Fox claimed the title in the 100-meter dash in 26.87 seconds, with Liz Pieri fourth in 28.17 seconds, and in the 100-meter dash Fox was second (13.04 seconds) to Mexico’s Chelsea Beshures (12.95 seconds). Pieri made her mark in the 400-meter dash, winning in 1:00.86 to beat Phoenix’s Marisa Turner (1:02.63).
Tangela Hightower won both throwing events. Hightower, with a toss of 33 feet 1 inch, edged teammate Sierra Vasiliou (32’11”) in the shot put, and in the discus heaved it exactly 89 feet, four inches ahead of Cortland’ Emily Ross.
Maggie Fuller, second in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.12, prevailed in the high jump when she cleared 5’2″ with fewer misses than Phoenix’s Marissa Turner. Danielle Doss rose to second in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet as Katy Pieri (8’6″) took fourth.
Doss also was second in the 100 hurdles (17.58 seconds), where Danforth (17.68 seconds) was third. Noelle Novakowski picked up 2,019 points for third place in the pentathlon.
ESM’s Amanda Wall twice thwarted J-D. In the long jump, Wall, by going 17’9 1/2″, was more than a foot ahead of Vasiliou (16’8 1/2″), while in the triple jump Wall went 34′ 1/4″ to edge J-D’s Patrece Martin (33’11 1/2″), with the Rams’ Taylor Cook third with 32’10 3/4″.
Gabby Pallotta put together a third-place time of 11:19.22 in the 3,000-meter run, while Juliette Miller was third (2:29.15) in the 800. Nina Zesky gave the Spartans a fourth-place high jump of 4’10”, with Megan Terry (8 feet) fifth in the pole vault.
