It took the reigning state champions, hungry for another crown, to end the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team’s venture through the Section III Class C playoffs.
The no. 9 seed Lakers fell, 18-11, to top seed Christian Brothers Academy in Tuesday night’s Class C quarterfinal at Alibrandi Stadium.
Just two weeks earlier, Cazenovia had taken the measure of CBA at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, a 15-5 defeat. In the rematch, the Lakers’ attack vastly improved, but it still wasn’t enough against the Brothers’ high-scoring assault.
Colleen Dougherty, in defeat, put together four goals. Emmajean Speer and Kristie Kleine each had two goals and one assist, while Becca Wheeler also found the net twice. Jessy Silfer earned the other goal as Kayla Dorrance recorded two assists.
Cazenovia’s defense, working around goalie Lauren Devine (who made 10 saves), found some parts of CBA’s attack far too difficult to contain. Marisa Romeo led the Brothers with four goals and four assists as teammate Caroline Webster put up five goals and two assists.
So the Lakers, under first-year head coach Caitlin Byrne, finished with a 9-9 mark, having worked hard late in the season just to reach the sectional tournament, and earning a first-round win over Marcellus (14-13) before CBA ended things.
