All through the spring, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls golf team had displayed steady improvement, with sophomore Brianna Sovring at the forefront.
And when the top golfers in the area gathered for Tuesday’s Section III championships at Foxfire, Sovring burst into the limelight and earned a berth in next month’s state tournament.
Throughout a steady 18-hole round in calm conditions on the demanding Foxfire layout, Sovring maintained a steady scoring pace until she turned in an 87.
Once all the scores had posted, Sovring found out that she had finished alone in seventh place, safely within the top-nine cutoff of top players that advance to the June 8-10 state finals at SUNY-Delhi.
Sovring joins a sectional All-Star squad that includes Rachael Halwig (Holland Patent), Emilee Oakes (CBA) and two players each from Rome Free Academy (Nicolette Darois and Mary Ann Bulawa), Fayetteville-Manlius (Meghan Kingsley and Allison Donella) and Jamesville-DeWitt (Molly Hair and Victoria Roney).
It was Darois winning the individual sectional title with an 81, one ahead of Halwig and Kingsley, who notched a hole-in-one on Foxfire’s par-three 17th.
As a team, C-NS posted 401, finishing fifth among Division I (large school sides). RFA won the team title with 352 as F-M (370), CBA (387) and Baldwinsville (388) rounded out the top four.
Senior Meagan Fandrich finished exactly at 100, tying for 26th place. Sophomore Bridget Burrows posted a 104, while another sophomore, Rachel Brooks, finished at 110.
