Right before the regular season concluded, the Skaneateles boys golf team earned a prestigious tournament title.
The Lakers knocked off five other OHSL Liberty division foes in Monday’s West End Classic, played at Bellevue Country Club. Skaneateles had a team score of 206, just one shot better than runner-up Westhill.
Jimmy Atkinson, with a nine-hole total of 38, led the Lakers’ efforts as Doug Pinckney and Sean Farrell both shot 40. Cazenovia’s Trevor Gatzke and Westhill’s Nate Meisner both shot 37 to take individual honors, one shot ahead of Atkinson.
As a follow-up, Skaneateles went head-to-head with Cazenovia and won the battle of Laker teams 206-219. Playing at Skaneateles Country Club, Atkinson and Pinckney both posted rounds of 40, with Mike Jorgenson adding a 41, the same as Cazenovia’s top player Matt Schaffner.
When the Skaneateles girls golf team took on OHSL leader Christian Brothers Academy last Monday afternoon, it did so as part of a three-team match at Drumlins.
The Lakers shot 208, easily beating Chittenango’s total of 258, but falling to the Brothers 180. Kelsey Fenner led Skaneateles with a nine-hole total of 45, tying CBA’s Ellie Baumgartner and beaten only by Baumgartner’s teammate, Emilie Oakes, who had a 39.
This led to Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League tournament, played Wednesday at Woodcrest Golf Club, where the Lakers had a solid showing as it claimed third place with 425. Only CBA (387) and Jamesville-DeWitt (389) fared better.
Fenner posted an 18-hole score of 96, finishing fifth among individuals. Grace Magee added a 103, while Samantha Bentley shot 113 and Maddy Rieks had a 119. J-D’s Molly Hair won the individual title with an 86.
