Every 15 minutes in the United States, someone takes his or her own life. Suicide claims more than 34,000 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute, with nearly one million people attempting suicide each year.
Stand Against Suicide aims to change that, and they need the community’s help to do it. This summer, SAS will hold its first-ever “Take a Stand, Save a Life” fundraiser. The soon-to-be annual event will feature a craft fair, car and motorcycle show, live music, raffles, children’s activities and food. Numerous local businesses have donated gift certificates, baskets and services to be raffled off during the event. Most importantly, the event will educate people about mental illness and suicide prevention. All proceeds will benefit Stand Against Suicide.
Take a Stand, Save a Life 2012 will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at Keg’s Canal Side, 7 North Hamilton St., Jordan. Tickets are $15 in advance of the event and can be obtained at standagainstsuicide.org or from any Stand Against Suicide volunteer. They can also be purchased at the event for $20 apiece. About Stand Against Suicide: Stand Against Suicide was founded in 2010 by Tara Kinsella Dennee in memory of her father, Wayne Olmstead, who died by suicide in 2008. The Elbridge-based organization gained nonprofit status in 2011. It seeks to raise awareness about the risks of mental illness and to encourage those in need to get help. Through a grant from the Pepsi Foundation and local fundraisers, Stand Against Suicide seeks to erase the stigma surrounding the discussion of mental illness and suicide. Together, we can save lives.
