Kaela Fiutak, Erin Tonzi and Madeline Adams each won events as the Skaneateles girls track and field team claimed second place in Monday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus.
Fiutak, in the pole vault, did not reach her school-record mark of 10 feet 6 inches, but did clear 9 feet to win the title as teammate Megan Molnar (8’6) slid into third place.
Tonzi would beat the field in the triple jump, going 32’4 ¼” to top Homer’s Sabina Clark (31’7”) and the rest of the field. And Adams would dominate the 3,000-meter run, her time of 10 minutes, 22.07 seconds bettering Cazenovia’s Jeanette Cudney (10:57.99) by more than half a minute.
Skaneateles would also win a relay – the 4×400, where the quartet of Taylor Woodruff, Molly McCarthy, Anna Barnett and Courtney Pitman got a time of 4:18.90, just enough to edge Homer (4:19.33) at the line.
Overall, Skaneateles had 96.5 points, beating most of the field, but not able to catch up from its fellow Lakers from Cazenovia, who won with 195 points.
Mary Buck contended in the pentathlon, picking up 2,121 points and winning three of the five events (800 meters, long jump and high jump), but still settling for second place behind CBA’s Marisa Hamel, who had 2,199 points.
Woodruff, in the 400-meter dash, was second in 59.35 seconds to Cazenovia’s Ashley Winn (57.80), and added a third in the 200-meter dash in 26.69 seconds as McCarthy (28.43 seconds) was fifth. Tonzi got fourth place in the 800-meter run in 2:29.34.
Adams, Tonzi, Kaitlyn Neal and Jenn DeRosa rose to second in the 4×800 relay in 9:57.56, trailing only Westhill/Bishop Ludden (9:54.41). Grace Delasin, Nikki Cole, Corinne LaFrance and Ashley Bonocore took third in the 4×100 relay in 54.98 seconds.
Rachel Baker took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 28’ ¾”, and Woodruff was fifth (13’11 ¾”) in the long jump. Virginia Hamlin was sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:32.98, while Pitman cleared 4’4” to tie for sixth in the high jump.
On the boys side, Skaneateles picked up 67 points, but that only left them in fifth place in the nine-team field as CBA prevailed with 132 points.
Khiary Gale tore through his specialty, the triple jump, winning with a leap of 45 feet 3 inches, nearly five feet better than the rest of the field. Taylor Weyneth also won, in the 400 hurdles, his time of 1:01.07 beating Hannibal’s Jordan Skipworth by 1.26 seconds, and Weyneth got third (16.62 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles.
Sam Goodell earned second in the long jump, going 19’2 ½”, while Carson Schwab used a clearance of 11 feet for third place in the pole vault. Nick Hook topped 5’6” for fourth place in the high jump.
Malik Merritt, in the 200-meter dash, took third place in 23.73 seconds, and also was third in the 100 (11.64 seconds) ahead of Nick Simmons (11.94 secodns) in fifth place.
J.J. Gregg, Matt Delasin, Matt Clymer and Ethan Johanns rose to third in the 4×800 relay (8:41.93) as Clymer, Delasin, Gregg and Max Weiss were fifth in the 4×400 relay in 3:42.47.
