Cazenovia High School seniors were invited to take a little time out of their schooldays, and enjoy some cake on May 1.
The high school counseling office coordinated a celebratory gathering for all students that will be receiving diplomas on June 23. About 138 senior are on track to graduate this year, with the majority continuing on to college, planning on full-time employment and heading to the military.
“We want to celebrate all of the senior class’ accomplishments,” said Cazenovia High School Guidance Counselor Britt Zumpano. “We do it to celebrate wherever anyone is going after high school, we’re proud of our whole senior class, and we want everyone to have their moment of recognition as they head into the final month.”
While select senior athletes are often honored with signing ceremonies, this celebration was meant to commemorate all of the students’ future plans.
During the party, members of the high school counseling team dished out cake and discussed the students’ future plans. Zumpano, Cara LaVine and Bob Oldfield recorded each senior’s future plans and wrote their names and information on a “shooting star,” which was then displayed on one of the interior walls of the school.
Following the festivities, the excess cakes untouched by the teenagers were distributed throughout the district, reaching the far corners of the elementary and middle schools. High School Guidance Counselor Susan Tresco said the party was also meant to celebrate the staff, heading into the home stretch of another school year.
“Everybody contributes. From Burton Street Elementary School, to the district bus garage, to each of the schools’ janitorial staff; we all work as a team,” Tresco said. “So, we wanted to include everybody in the celebration.”
Members of the teaching staff, as well as high school Principal Eric Schnabl and Assistant Principal Susan Vickers stopped by during the celebration to congratulate the graduating seniors and wish them luck.
“This is an exceptional group of young men and women, who possess a wide variety of strengths and talents. I am confident that this graduating class will experience great success in their post-secondary endeavors,” Schnabl said. “They have been a lot of fun and it has been my pleasure to be a part of their high school experience. I wish them all the best the world can offer.”
Graduation will be held at 11 a.m. June 23 on the green outside Cazenovia Middle School, weather permitting.
