Village named Tree City
Village officials declared Friday, April 27, Arbor Day in Baldwinsville. In recognition of the declaration, the tree was planted in the development of Baldwin Hill. Graham attended the dedication and noted the village has held the Tree City designation for 26 consecutive years and is the oldest Tree City in New York State. Baldwinsville has shown a steady commitment to trees, not only planting and maintaining them but also removing sick trees. In fact, the sugar maple was replacing a sick tree at the Baldwin Hill location. “We don’t want to cut down any trees if we don’t have to,” said Baker, the village engineer. “We hope this one lasts 50 years and is monstrous.”
Tree memorial
On April 28, a memorial tree planting took place in Village Square (located behind Sheehan’s Appliances) in Baldwinsville. In memory of Emily Triggs, founder of the Baldwinsville Women’s Garden Club, a Cardinal Crabapple tree was planted. Three of Emily’s children, Barbara Triggs Anscombe, Robert Triggs and Mary Triggs Allen, attended the memorial and Garden Club President Gerry Lindeqvist (pictured with the tree) gave a presentation.
