Led by the likes of Gina Carnovale and a deep pack of distance runners, the Baldwinsville girls track and field team turned back Liverpool by a score of 75-66 Wednesday afternoon at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
Carnovale excelled at the sprints, taking the 100-meter dash in 12.5 seconds, nearly half a second ahead of the Warriors’ Jazmine Herbert (12.9 seconds), and holding on in the 200-meter dash to again beat Herbert, 26.9 seconds to 27.0.
In the long jump, Carnovale claimed a third title, while Cierra Allen stepped up I the 400-meter dash and blazed to first place in 58.9 seconds, her best time of the season.
Rachael Miller’s victory in the 1,500-meter run (5:05, to Annie Peterson’s 5:06) began a sweep where Peterson would get a top time of 11:09 in the 3,000-meter run and Mackenzie Ross claimed her specialty, the 800-meter run, in 2:31. Morgan Marshall, Angelica Tomasello, Quaneisha Ivey and Marissa Lathrop teamed up as the Bees won the 4×400 relay in 4:15.
In field events, Emily Soeder got a victory in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 2 inches, while Carlie McNamara earned first place in the discus.
Not far away, at LHS Stadium, B’ville’s boys track team took a 90-51 defeat to Liverpool, and two of the wins came from Shawn Calnan, who went 38’4 ½” in the triple jump and cleared 5’8” to win the high jump.
Elsewhere, Andrew Fleming took first place in the 800-meter run in 2:05.1, with Drew Beidermann clearing 10 feet to prevail in the pole vault. Shay Sargeant chimed in by recording a first-place long jump of 20’8 ½”.
For the victorious Warriors, Penn State-bound senior Zavon Watkins stood out, zooming to a top time of 50.7 seconds in the 400-meter dash and running the mile in 4:40.
