Clearing the last hurdle before this week’s showdown with Cicero-North Syracuse, the Liverpool boys track and field team was quite impressive in Wednesday’s home meet against Baldwinsville, roaring to a 90-51 victory over the Bees.
Zavon Watkins tore to a time of 50.1 seconds in the 400-meter dash, also prevailing in the mile with a time of 4:40 flat. Ryheim Lawes also won twice, breaking the 11-second mark in the 100-meter dash (10.9 seconds, to be exact) and also claiming the 200-meter dash in a quick 22.4 seconds.
Keewan Rondinello continued his domination of the 400 hurdles, getting a win in 57.9 seconds, while Adam Zinger took the 3,200-meter run in 10:37.7. Gaurab Bhattacharya earned a top time of 16.5 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Liverpool also found success in field events, where Nick Leedom took the shot put with a toss of 47 feet 9 inches and Chris Gilmore threw the discus 123’ 4 ½”.
A key point was the Warriors sweeping all three relays, with Watkins in each of the events. Watkins helped Anthony Ostuni, Dan Muldoon and Alex Christensen as they took the 4×800 (8:10.1), and then went to the 4×100 where he, along with Christensen, Muldoon and Steve Fiorello, covered it in 44.2 seconds.
Just to make it complete, Watkins and Fiorello joined Sean Brais and Joe Napolitano as they gained a winning time of 3:27.4 in the 4×400 relay.
Up at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, Liverpool’s girls track team tried for a sweep against Baldwinsville, but could not quite pull it off, falling to the Bees 75-66.
Ore Akinpelu ran to the top spot in the 400 hurdles, only to get second place in the 400 sprint (1:01.9) to B’ville’s Cierra Allen (58.9). Akinpelu, Jazmine Herbert, Connie Torres and Catherine Rowell would prevail in the 4×100 in a season-best 49.8 seconds.
On her own, Rowell did get first place in the triple jump, but finished second in the long jump to B’ville’s Gina Carnovale. Herbert was second to Carnovale in both the 100 and 200 sprints.
Leah Dixon took the 100-meter hurdles. Shae Shenandoah and Nicole Barrett tied for first in the pole vault, each of them clearing 7 feet 6 inches, with Claire McCarthy winning the shot put.
