Now in a winning groove, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team passed the midway point of the regular season, continuing to build momentum.
When the Mustangs met the combined Bishop Ludden/Bishop Grimes entry last Monday, it ignored the chilly, wet conditions to prevail by a score of 17-9.
Again, goalie Renee Poullott proved difficult to solve, giving up just two goals in the first half on her way to nine saves. Though Ludden/Grimes did better in the second half, the Mustangs already had a comfortable working margin.
Grace Nolan, in particular, had a big day, scoring seven times and adding an assist. Grace Hunt and Lexy Bird each had three-goal hat tricks, with Molly McGuane adding two goals and two assists. Audrey Cerrone had a goal and two assists and Molly Caldwell also found the net.
On Ludden/Grimes’ side, Erannan Shattuck stood out with four goals and two assists. Gemma O’Kane was right behind, with three goals and one assist, while Sienna Laneve and Liz Tully also converting. Nicole Granteed and Teresa Shattuck earned assists.
Without any rest, Ludden/Grimes played again a day later and lost, 18-8, to defending state Class C champion CBA.
Led by Erannan Shattuck, who finished with four goals, Ludden/Grimes was within a reasonable distance, 10-5, at halftime, but could not put together a sustained run to make it closer. Granteed, Tully and Alex Szelewski earned goals, too. Caroline Webster led the Brothers with six goals and one assist.
Marcellus was back on Wednesday, hosting Onondaga and rolling past the Tigers 13-6. None of it was spectacular, but the Mustangs had a 6-2 lead by halftime and never got a serious challenge.
McGuane, with five goals and one assist, took the lead as Nolan still managed three goals and two assists. Bird and Emily Hennigan both had two goals and one assist as Hunt also converted.
Jordan-Elbridge, mired at 1-5 when the week got underway, took a large step toward recovery at home on Wednesday afternoon, knocking off Cazenovia 11-10.
In a game where neither side could gain any clear edge, the Eagles’ defense proved effective in the first half and helped produce a 4-3 lead. As the second half wore on, both teams would make surges, but J-E would hang on.
Amanda Wheeler led the way, with three goals and four assists, her passes often going to Emily Bates, who scored four times and added an assist. Alexis Malvaso got two goals, while Amanda Brown and Kelsey Youmell earned single tallies.
Westhill, off until Thursday’s game against Tully, seemed to go cold during its layoff, which showed in a 12-4 defeat to the Black Knights that dipped the team’s record to 3-5.
Steadily, Tully pulled clear behind a balanced attack, paced by Amanda Briggs and Ally McNerney, who earned three goals apiece. In defeat, Westhill’s Brenna Rainone scored twice, adding an assist, while Maggie Tripodi earned a pair of assists. Shelby Stack and Ryann Laible had the other goals.
As this went on, Ludden/Grimes took a 13-3 defeat to Skaneateles, only getting goals from Tully, O’Kane and Erannan Shattuck as the Lakers steadily pulled away from a modest 5-2 halftime margin. Emma Ford and Carly Davis led Skaneateles with four goals apiece.
