Even with big efforts from the likes of Kaela Fiutak and Madeline Adams, the Skaneateles girls track and field team could not quite keep up with OHSL Liberty division favorite Cazenovia.
Skaneateles lost the battle of Laker teams Wednesday by a 90-51 margin last Wednesday at Buckley-Volo Field, though it did manage a split of the three-way meet by beating Solvay 121-20.
Fiutak competed in the pole vault and, despite the chilly conditions, recorded the top vault of the season in Section III, clearing 10 feet 9 inches.
Meanwhile, Adams swept the distance running events. She earned first place in the 1,500-meter run in a time of four minutes, 53.7 seconds, beating Cazenovia’s Caroline Marshall by 3.4 seconds, while in the 3,000-meter run Adams finished in 10:53.1, nearly 10 seconds better than another Cazenovia runner, Jeannette Cudney.
Erin Tonzi earned her team’s other title, in the triple jump, going 32’7 ½” to prevail. Cazenovia featured Paige Biviano, who won the long jump, shot put and high jump, along with dual wins from Ashley Winn (100 and 200 meters) and Ashley Kent (100 and 400 hurdles).
In the simultaneous boys meet, Skaneateles also earned a split, but in the reverse order, beating Cazenovia 80-61 while taking an 87-54 defeat to Solvay.
Khiary Gale continued to dazzle in the triple jump, going 42’ 10 ½”, while Hunter Dickerson threw the discus 112’5” and Nate Molnar won the shot put with a heave of 39’ 7 ½”.
With Solvay dominating most of the oval events (Nick Cometti and John Salvagno each won twice) and claiming a pair of relays, Skaneateles only broke through in the 4×100, where Gale, Dan Wolfanger, Malik Merritt and Sam Goodell won in a time of 46.6 seconds.
