All kinds of tension and excitement marked the Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge track and field team’s head-to-head match last Wednesday, part of a three-way meet at Hannibal.
On the girls side, the Eagles and Mustangs tied, 70-70, though J-E got credit for the win, as both of them would beat the host Warriors – 93-43 for J-E, 91-49 for Marcellus.
Rachel Scott led J-E, as she took the 100-meter hurdles in 17.8 seconds and also taking the 400-meter hurdles in 1:15.3, while Abby Gugel was victorious in the 3,000-meter run in 11:42.6.
In field events, Megan Greenwood won the shot put with 29 feet 9 ½ inches, Emma Cooney took the triple jump (29’ 3 ½”) and Olivia Sanford cleared 6 feet to claim the pole vault.
Marcellus, meanwhile, had Rachel Garn take first at both 800 meters (2:25.0) and 1,500 meters (5:03.9), while Abbie Fallon was first in the long jump with 14’5”.
The Mustangs also won all three relays, taking the 4×100 (56.7 seconds), 4×400 (4:28.4) and 4×800 (11:31.4) relays as Garn, Fallon, Tori Stopen, Maggie Dunn, Shannon Twombly, Emma Blystone, Brianna Szczech and Emily Townsend took part.
Westhill/Bishop Ludden split its boys meet with CBA and Homer, beating the Trojans 87-54, but falling to the Brothers by a 78-65 margin.
Jack Honis tore to a time of 15.4 seconds in the 110 high hurdles and 1:01.6 in the 400 hurdles. Corey Wilkinson put up a discus throw of 141’2”, adding a top shot put throw of 45’9 ¾”, while Antoine Montgomery won the long jump (18’5”) and triple jump (39’5”). Mike Herholtz cleared 10’6” in the pole vault.
In the girls meet, Westhill/Ludden also had a split, this time beating CBA 84-49, but falling to Homer 86-55, largely because the Trojans’ Jekeytha Adkins won four times – in the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles, plus long jump and triple jump.
Three different Westhill/Ludden athletes had double wins. Emliy Washburn took the 1,500 (5:04.7) and 800 (2:31.6), while Caroline Black was first in the 400 (1:05.3) and 3,000 (11:06.3). Kayla Wild added titles in the shot put (27’ 9 ¼”) and discus (86’1”). In the 4×400, Black and Washburn helped Westhill/Ludden win in 4:30.4.
Solvay went to Cazenovia and swept a boys three-way meet, knocking off both the host Lakers 93-48 and also beating the Skaneateles Lakers 87-54. The girls Bearcats lost by margins of 129-12 to Cazenovia and 121-20 to Skaneateles.
In that boys meet, Nick Cometti and John Salvagno both won twice. Cometti prevailed in the 100 (11.5 seconds) and 200 (23.7 seconds) sprints, while Salvagno covered the 110 hurdles in 16.2 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:01.4.
