With the April 16 hiccup against Fayetteville-Manlius further behind them, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team scored a pair of impressive efforts to make it four wins in a row.
To start with, the Bees went to Cicero-North Syracuse last Monday night. Thankful to be on an artificial turf amid the cold, wet conditions, B’ville defeated the Northstars 16-8.
In a reversal of the effort against Liverpool on April 20, the Bees this time struggled through the first half on the defensive side, needing plenty of attacks of its own to forge an 8-6 lead.
After the break, though, B’ville wore C-NS down, outscoring them 8-2. Ashley Gentile, with four goals, and Maggie Monnat, with three goals and two assists, led a balanced attack.
Erika Wilcox also scored three times, while Claire Monnat and Taylor Gebhardt each found the net twice. Kennedy Frink and Taylor Pastore notched single goals.
Three nights later, B’ville hosted defending Class B champion Oswego. The Buccaneers had started 7-0 before it lost to West Genesee, a game that took place two nights prior to its visit to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
Perhaps realizing the quality of the opposition, B’ville stepped up its game even further, ripping Oswego 21-8. From the start, the Bees ran right past the Bucs’ defenders, gaining a 12-5 edge by halftime, and the margin would only keep growing.
Gentile had her best career outing, finishing with seven goals. Five others – Wilcox, Pastore, Gebhardt, Sarah Klaben and Claire Monnat – got two goals, while Kennedy Frink and Maggie Monnat each had one goal and two assists. Amari Pollard and Johna Kjerstad scored, too. Becca Martin led Oswego with four goals.
All of this, plus Tuesday’s warm-up with Rome Free Academy, is leading toward the latest showdown with West Genesee next Friday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium. WG, no. 3 in the state Class A rankings, beat the Bees 11-6 in their first meeting on March 31.
