Baldwinsville’s boys tennis team started to hit the bulk of its schedule, succeeding so far in its main quest to keep itself undefeated and ahead of the CNY Counties League pack.
When the Bees faced Auburn last Monday afternoon, a point slipped away in singles, but it was otherwise a smooth outing as B’ville prevailed 6-1.
Blaine Drake and Alec Funicello survived a first-set tie-breaker and topped Matt Carberry and Kevin Franceschelli 7-6, 6-1. Reversing that trend, Scott Ferrari and Tyler Shaban had the tie-breaker in the second set of a 6-1, 7-6 win over Carberry and Richard Nelson.
It proved easier for Chris Johns and Matt Rothenhoefer, who beat Luke Colella and Jerry Sylvester 6-3, 6-2, as John Jeffery and Matt Lawrence beat Mark Bachman and Tyler Glimpse 6-2, 6-0.
Up in singles, Nick Walker ran into Auburn’s Nick Petrosino and took a 6-1, 6-1 defeat. Dan Kot had a second-set tie-breaker, but still beat Richard Granato 6-2, 7-6 as Grady Schmidt roared past Tom Alexander 6-3, 6-1.
No points were lost on Thursday, though, when B’ville swept past Oswego 7-0 to make it five consecutive victories.
Walker, who beat Kyle Kemper 6-2, 6-2, had the closest singles match as Kot beat Austin Demott 6-1, 6-1 and Schmidt roared past Michael Hart 6-0, 6-1.
In second doubles, Johns and Rothenhoefer had a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Jeremy Galvin and Dylan Lavner. Drake and Funicello handled Nick Bonacorsi and Stefan Mazuroski 6-3, 6-1, while Jeffery and Lawrence took out Jacob Getman and Alex Kemper 6-2, 6-0. Scott Ferrari and Tyler Shaban completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Ali Al-Salamah and Kyle McCauley.
B’ville will be favored again this week in league matches against Cicero-North Syracuse and Central Square.
