Both inside and outside of its own matches, the Skaneateles boys tennis team is making lots of noise.
It was exciting enough in Monday’s home match against rival Marcellus, where the Lakers needed some clutch play in doubles from Matt Carroll and Matt Kallas to pull out a 3-2 victory over the Mustangs.
By the time the decisive match hit its third set, Ethan Wilcox had already beaten James Garzia 6-2, 6-0 and Ryan Sayko had stopped Dan Martin 6-3, 6-0. Will Bolton fell to Sean Dunn 6-1, 6-1, with Kevin Goetzmann and Jamie Roney falling in doubles to Shane Barner and Andrew Herold 7-6, 6-4.
So it was up to Carroll and Kallas, who faced the Marcellus duo of Kyle McVey and Mike Raymond. Carroll and Kallas won the first set 6-4 and lost the second set by that same margin, but it dominated in the final set, claiming it by a 6-2 margin.
Earlier this month, Wilcox captured the Boy’s 18 and under division of the Mendon Tennis Club Spring Championships, a Level I USTA event.
Against a tough regional field of players, Wilcox defeated Chris Hayes of Rochester 6-4, 6-3 in the finals. In the semifinals and quarterfinals, he beat top Buffalo juniors John Drake in straight sets and Nate Palmer in three sets, digging himself out of a 7-1 hole in the tie-breaker to beat Palmer.
Recently, Wilcox has been playing up an age division within the Eastern Tennis Association. Back on March 17-18 at the Midtown Boys Championships, Wilcox knocked off top seed Stefan Kuhar 6-1, 6-0 and reached the finals before falling to Corning’s Artem Khrapko. Wilcox also joined Sienna Susko to win the Heart-to-Heart 18-and-under doubles title.
