At least in its opening stretch, the Skaneateles softball team went to both extremes, getting badly beat – and then turning things around less than 48 hours later.
The season began last Monday at Austin Park with a 28-2 defeat to Cazenovia. Both runs came in the sixth inning as Emily Call picked up three hits, scoring one of the runs, and Chelsea Hamilton went two-for-four. Erica Nye scored the other run.
Forced to pitch all the way, Sarah Tomlinson never got a chance to rest. Cazenovia’s effort included three hits and eight RBIs from Nicole White.
Given this, what happened Wednesday against Jordan-Elbridge was all the more astonishing as the Lakers made a 40-run turnaround, shutting out the Eagles 14-0.
Already with a 1-0 lead, Skaneateles broke it open in the bottom of the third, blitzing J-E for seven runs. The Lakers then tacked on six more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, gathering 12 hits overall.
Kristin Didio had three of those hits, finishing with three RBIs. Madison Singler doubled twice, while Call and Erica Nye each drove in two runs. Six different players – Tomlinson, Call, Singler, Ally Pietropaoli, Jackie Leslie and Molly Kerstatter – scored two runs apiece.
Hamilton, meanwhile, took her turn in the pitcher’s circle and was nearly perfect, limiting the Eagles to one hit and one walk while registering 10 strikeouts.
