St. Mary’s church in Jamesville won’t be open in time for Easter as leaders of the church originally had thought.
The church celebrated its last Mass in 2007 after the Syracuse Diocese closed the Roman Catholic Church. Parishioners created an appeal committee, pleading with the Vatican to re-open the church. In May and November 2011, the Vatican ruled in favor of the parishioners.
Earlier this year, Syracuse Diocese officials suggested to parishioners that Easter, the holiday to celebrate the resurrection, would be an appropriate time for the church to open its doors again.
Leaders in the church community are now saying that conversations between the church and the Diocese have stalled, and the doors will not be open by Easter. According to an email sent Sunday night, trespassing signs remain at the church, and a new security system has been installed.
The church will be celebrating Easter with a concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Jamesville Community Church. The services will feature the Davies family.
