Though it may miss the post-season again, the Baldwinsville boys basketball team is determined to earn some more happy moments before exiting the stage.
And the Bees earned one of those moments on Friday night, going to Central Square and hanging on to earn a 51-49 victory over the Red Hawks.
As the pace picked up in the first half, the Bees kept pace, too, only trailing 22-19 at the half. Then B’ville’s offense, led again by Willie Hython, took over in the third period, outscoring Central Square 20-13.
Thanks to Hython’s 28 points, the Bees would stay out in front. Kevin Drain, with eight points, and Zach Leo, with six points (from a pair of 3-pointers), offered the support. Central Square’s Joe Piazza led his side with 23 points.
At home last Tuesday night to face Cicero-North Syracuse, the Bees played a strong first half, only to see it dissipate in the third quarter of a 79-48 loss to the Northstars.
All through the first half, B’ville traded baskets with C-NS, and even as the pace quickened, the Bees kept up, allowing them to go to the break in a 28-28 tie.
But B’ville’s defense fell apart in the third period, the Northstars outscoring them 30-11 to take control. Hython led the hosts with 14 points, with Drain and Jayson Brower adding seven points apiece. For C-NS, Sam Nassar had 16 points and Vaughndell Brantley added 15 points.
The Bees are set to finish the season this week with games against Nottingham and Fayetteville-Manlius.
