Westhill’s girls basketball team moved closer to an undefeated regular season – but the boys Warriors would hit another snag.
In twin contests against Marcellus Friday night, each school would win once. Moving to 16-0, the state Class B no. 6-ranked girls Warriors won big, 70-35, but it was the boys Mustangs coming out on top in an impressive 60-39 decision.
Still clinging to post-season hopes after a horrendous start in December, the Marcellus boys may have put together its best all-around effort of the season to subdue Westhill, who fell to 7-9.
A close game broke open in the second quarter, when the Mustangs outscored the Warriors 21-9. And to make sure Westhill didn’t get too close, Marcellus closed strong, too, on a 15-7 run.
Kyle Hastings had much to do with this result, pouring in 24 points, but he had ample support. Garrett Thompson managed 10 points, while Lamar Murray had nine points, Nick Sinay seven points and Duncan Merritt six points. On Westhill’s side, only Ryan Conroy, with 17 points, reached double figures.
It was far different in the girls game at Westhill, where the Warriors, after a week of rest, were sharp on the offensive end, especially in a 24-8 blitz through the second period that broke the game open.
Again, Anna Ross did a bit of everything, the sophomore finishing with 19 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and six steals. Sam Peebles added 17 points and five steals, with Gwen Dougherty managing nine points and 12 rebounds.
Maggie Tripodi (eight points) and Kelly Mascari (seven points) contributed, too, as Tripodi picked up eight assists and Mascari gained six rebounds. By contrast, no Marcellus player scored in double figures, though Brielle Filtch (eight points) and Tessa Mosher (six points) came close.
