The Skaneateles wrestling team would finish ninth in a 12-team field during Saturday’s Section III Class C championship meet at Sherburne-Earlville High School.
Overall, the Lakers had 59 points, far removed from a compelling championship battle where Canastota, with 211 points, barely held off General Brown (209.5 points) and Holland Patent (206 points) for team honors.
Max Collier, wrestling at 106 pounds, lost a semifinal match to Ilion’s Andy Coffin in a technical fall. Collier pinned HP’s Sam Olczyk in the third period, only to lose a 6-4 overtime decision to Brad Curry (Lowville) in the consolation bracket final, settling for fourth place.
Cooper Pitman (220 pounds) also was fourth, unable to stop HP’s Josh Langley in the semifinals and, in the third-place match, topped by Canastota’s Travis Conklyn.
Tyler Saunders, in the 126-pound quarterfinal, lost to Sherburne-Earlville’s Dustin Mosely, but he won twice in the consolation bracket and got revenge over Mosely with a third-period pin to gain fifth place.
Jake Brillo went 3-2 at 160 pounds. He pinned Hannibal’s Nick Kinville in the first round and, after a quarterfinal defeat, got a second pin over Matt Rose (Canastota). Brillo earned fifth place when he pinned Adirondack’s James Koperda in 2:25.
Nevan Rourke, at 99 pounds, lost in the quarterfinals to HP’s Alex Herringshaw, the eventual champion in that weight class. Drew Newton went 1-2 at 120 pounds, beating HP’s Erick Ward 7-5 for his lone victory of the meet. Ryan Dick went 0-2 at 138 pounds, with Connor Gray doing the same at 171 pounds.
