In a 48-hour span, the Skaneateles girls basketball team got a full glimpse of both ends of the OHSL Liberty division, with predictable results.
The top part went first, as the Lakers hosted undefeated, state Class B no. 6-ranked Westhill last Tuesday and struggled through most of a 59-44 loss to the Warriors.
By the time Skaneateles was able to produce baskets on a regular basis in the latter stages, Westhill already had a sizable lead, having started the game on an 18-7 run and not looking back.
Still, Joanna Dobrovosky managed 14 points, while Jackie Leslie earned 12 points and Elizabeth Lane finished with nine points. Both of Westhill’s top offensive threats had fine showings, as Anna Ross led with 20 points and Sam Peebles threw in 18 points.
By contrast, when Skaneateles met Homer Thursday night, it went in the other direction as the Lakers bashed the visiting Trojans 70-23.
Throughout a one-sided first half, the Lakers’ production picked up, and just to be sure, Skaneateles outscored Homer 21-5 in the third quarter, which allowed everyone on the roster to see some playing time.
And all 11 players that saw action got at least two points. By herself, Lane nearly outscored the entire Homer roster, the freshman landing 20 points, hitting on four 3-pointers. Leslie had 11 points, while Brittany Welch (nine points), Nicole Beaston (seven points) and Shannon Byrne (six points) each had season-high totals.
Skaneateles (7-8) still could earn a winning record if it wins each of its remaining three regular-season games, including home dates with Cazenovia and Solvay next week before the regular season ends Feb. 10 at Jordan-Elbridge.
