For more than 15 years, ladies professional golfers looking to make it to the LPGA have made a summer stop in Central New York, and will do so again – even if the name is a bit different.
The Symetra Tour is the new name for the former LPGA Futures Tour as Symetra, a financial services company based in Bellevue, Wash., has taken over sponsorship of the full tour.
And that tour will return to Drumlins Country Club’s East course on July 23-29 for the Credit Union Classic Presented by Wegmans, as several different entities have taken over tournament sponsorship from Alliance Bank.
As announced last week in a news conference, SEFCU, Empower Federal Credit Union and Summit Federal Credit Union have agreed to combine their forces to back the event, with Wegmans returning as a presenting sponsor.
Just as in years past, the 54-hole tournament will run Friday through Sunday, preceded by two days of pro-ams. The purse remains the same, $100,000, with the winner earning $14,000. And the tournament will continue to benefit the First Tee of Syracuse.
Each of the last two years, the tournament champion, Cindy LaCrosse (2010) and Kathleen Ekey (2011), have gone on to win Player of the Year honors, as well as their LPGA cards.
