Each of the Skaneateles basketball teams are heading into high-profile games against Westhill on Friday night with lots of momentum.
In fact, the girls Lakers have won four in a row, all on the road. Skaneateles put together its most complete effort of the season last Tuesday night, when it went to Solvay and dominated in all phases of the game in a 57-19 romp over the Bearcats.
Right from the opening tip, the newly-constructed full-court press for Skaneateles had its desired effect. Solvay could not handle it, and the Lakers had a 22-5 edge by the time the first quarter was done.
Things settled down for the rest of the half, which didn’t please the Lakers one bit. For when it returned to the court for the third quarter, Skaneateles promptly blanked Solvay the entire eight minutes while putting together another 14-0 spurt.
Each of the 10 Laker players that saw action got at least one point on the board, and even with a quiet effort from freshman star Elizabeth Lane (just four points), others gladly stepped up.
Jackie Leslie led the way, her 19 points matching Solvay’s entire output, while Emily Call finished with nine points and Joanna Dobrovosky added six points. Brittany Welch and Mary Buck had five points apiece.
Back home, the Skaneateles boys team geared up for Westhill (their first encounter since last year’s Section III Class B final) by beating Solvay 60-41.
Though Solvay tried to push the pace early, it didn’t work. Skaneateles turned a modest 19-16 advantage into something much more substantial by outscoring the Bearcats 20-8 the rest of the half.
For the rest of the game, the Lakers nursed that cushion by spreading the production around. Jimmy Atkinson and Brandon Barron each put up 13 points, while Austin Gardner managed eight points.
In all, eight different Laker players had at least one field goal, symbolized by the fact that Ryan McQuiggan, Alex Brownlee and Kulik Abrams had six points apiece. Eric Kendrick led Solvay with 14 points.
